About Arthur Rose

Arthur Rose Sr. (May 26, 1921 - February 13, 1995) was a prominent African-American painter, sculptor, and educator renowned for his contributions to the arts and academia in the United States. Born in Charleston South Carolina, Rose’s artistic journey was nurtured by his community and family including their longstanding membership at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

After serving honorably in the Navy during World War II, Rose pursued his passion for art, graduating cum laude from Claflin University and earning a master's degree from New York University under the mentorship of acclaimed artists like Hale Woodruff. Returning to Claflin as a faculty member, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Art, later transferring to Voorhees College as Artist in Residence. Beyond his pedagogical endeavors, Rose's legacy endures through the lives of his students, many of whom he supported both academically and personally, nurturing their talents and fostering successful careers in art and education, thus leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of South Carolina and beyond.
